        • Simplest yet

I have seen external antennas in the past, and they required you to do everything from making a focus-thingy from a pringles can and buying a jack that fits into the phone. This is by far the simplest external antenna i have seen, and it is a great contribution to metacafe. Thanx!

                    • band

What band is this designed for? I'm running Verizon Wireless, is that the same band as T-mobile?

Thanks. Great video. I love these kinds of thing.

                      • Band

This one is geared for GSM, which is the more dominant technology in the world and quickly becoming so in the US. However, GSM frequencies are scattered among frequency harmonics of CDMA bands, so this antenna should work for both, just a little bit better for GSM.

                      • No problem...

                        Like I said above:
Just make the antenna, strip 4cm instead of just 1cm and don't make the bottom bend. Move the antenna about on the back and sides of your phone while watching the signal meter. Eventually you will see a jump in the signal meter. That means the antenna is over your phone's internal antenna. What it is doing is passively radiating the signal through the phone's case. It's not as effective as the example in the video, but some gain is better than no gain at all.
I tried this on a Dopod900 which doesn't have an external antenna plug either, and it worked just fine.

                            • uh, ok

In most emergencies, you can actually lay against the back of your hood or trunk, the extra bounce feed from GSM signals will be amplified with no special antenas as most GSM or PSC phones no longer carry the external plug anymore. Most have an external antenna line in the charge/data connector. Or for an emergency, if available, try to carry an old Nokia 3390 and a car charger. This model phone pulls a greater ammount of bandwidth then usual phones (signal hog, why companies don't like it), so move your SIM, charge it up and go. Or charge it up and you can still call 911, even with no SIM.

                              • Did you test out in real life the exact

same antenna you show us in the movie or did you make one with better precision. The frequencies used by cell phones today require that the antenna length is made with very high precision (fractions of mm) if you want the best results, especially if you have a dual or tripple band unit. As a matter of fact, if you connect an antenna with a wrong length, because of SWR you can fry your phone's output stage circuitry!

                                • Yes.

I bench-tested this antenna using a variety of cell phones on a microwave spectrum field strength / SWR meter and a frequency counter to check for deviance. While GSM and CDMA are 2 different frequencies, They are frequency harmonics of each other. This is how cellular companies can change standards without having to strip each one of their millions of towers around the world and remount new antennae. Also, with the low milliwatt output of the handheld phones, SWR isn't as much a threat as it was with their older 5 watt output bag phone cousins. That's why they can operate without a groundplane and not fry their transmitter.
